EVENING PV THURS JULY 6TH - 5.30 TO 9PM

SHOW RUNS JULY 1ST TO 30TH

What are you looking at? Kelly Drake’s most recent series of oil paintings represent a dramatic range of styles and references.  The works reference artists like Hockney and Guston, appropriating the innocence of children’s drawings and asking questions about the gaze and perception.  Using everyday experiences of holidays and play, Kelly’s work uses vivid colour to express joy warmth and intimacy.

Opening the show to coincide with the first ever Forest Gayte Pride, Kelly said that she was delighted to be a part of the event.

‘Pride is, and has always been my favourite day of the year – it is ‘My Christmas’.  It represents everything that’s great about being a lesbian for me – the colour, the women, the shared happiness, solidarity, strength in numbers and joie de vivre about being part of my queer family.  I have had art shows during London Pride and Mardi Gras in years past so this beautifully brings me up to date as part of the Gayte gayers.  The title of the show also references my past experiences of being out and proud. I chose the title to chime in with my often voiced retort to the staring I would receive as I walked down the road with any of my past girlfriends.  Thankfully the gay community has come a long way since those scary days and Forest Gayte Pride is a positive sign of communities uniting to share pride in our rainbow lives.”

Kelly has been painting for twenty five years and as well as having led a very colourful life (so far) and an exciting artistic career she spends her professional time mentoring senior leaders and entrepreneurs, leading the NCT Branch in Newham, developing the First 1000 Days Art Project with new parents and babies and raising her three small children as a solo lesbian mum.
